What makes the e-clear oxygenator system such an effective sanitizer for your swimming pool and spa pool?

The e-clear oxygenator system uses three powerful sanitation processes, ie a patented natural oxygen process, copper ionization as well as an option for ultraviolet.

Do you get any odours from an e-clear oxygen pool?

No. Since e-clear swimming pools are 100% chlorine free, no harmful chloramine gas (or chlorine odours) are generated. E-clear pools are therefore ideal for asthma sufferers, and those with allergies to chlorine can swim for hours without any adverse health effects.

Is the e-clear system suitable for heated swimming pools and spa pools?

Yes, e-clear is installed in many heated pools and spa pools across the globe. Unlike chlorine that becomes useless at temperatures over 32°C and generates high levels of chloramine gas and Trihalomethanes at higher temperatures, the e-clear oxidation process and residual sanitizers are not affected by temperature and water and air quality remains healthy even at temperatures exceeding 36°C.

However, since heated water holds less dissolved oxygen than cold water at temperatures over 33°C we recommend including UV as an added level of sanitation.

How does e-clear compare to other oxidation-ionization systems?

E-clear systems are far more technologically advanced than their competitors.

Instead of a single pair of oxygen anodes that are usually only coated on one side, e-clear uses a unique patented multiple anode ('stack') technology (6-8 anodes per chamber) that are not only coated on both sides but with anode size, shape, oxidizing coating and microchip technology carefully designed to offer the highest output of oxidation currently available.

E-clear's stack technology delivers at least 10-fold more oxidation per chamber than the single plate anode systems used by competitors. Thus to achieve the same level of sanitation fewer chambers are required by e-clear offering clients a far more cost effective solution.

This multi anode hyper-oxidation feature and the ability to combine several oxygen chambers into large oxygen banks (e.g. MK250) allows e-clear to sanitize large olympic sized swimming pools with high bather loads. Our large industrial multiple chamber 'bank' systems for commercial swimming pools are far superior than the single plate single chamber systems used by competitors.

Furthermore, unlike competitor systems e-clear's oxygen and copper ionization plates are housed in separate chambers rather than in the same chamber. Therefore with e-clear there is no switching between oxygen and ionization modes providing a continuous 100% oxidation output. The result is far greater sanitation levels than competitor systems.

What makes the e-clear method of oxidation more healthy than other methods?

With e-clear there is no harmful DBPs or chloramine gas produced in the water.

Unlike chlorine, salt chlorination or ozone that generate harmful sanitizers in the swimming pool itself, e-clear sanitizes the water not the swimmer. The e-clear oxygenator system is unique in that it produces powerful oxidizers OH, O1, H2O2 in a sealed chamber away from the swimmer. OH, O1 and H2O2 are highly unstable molecules that revert back to water immediately leaving only Oxygen and water that is sanitized, but non-toxic.

In the e-clear swimming pool, swimmers are exposed to saturation levels of Dissolved Oxygen (DO). Because Oxygen is healthy, unlike chlorine and ozone there is no chance of harmful 'overdosing' the pool. Ionization output is regulated on the e-clear system to produce and maintain only a trace amount of copper ions. Both oxygen and copper ions are effective sanitizers yet beneficial, non-burning, non-corrosive leaving water soft and healthy.

Does the e-clear system need to run 24/7?

No. With saturation levels of Dissolved Oxygen (DO) in the pool and stable copper ions providing a long lasting sanitizing residual, water remains sanitized even when the e-clear system and pump are switched off. The e-clear pool pump runs for 8-10 hours in summer and 6-8 hours in winter, similar to a chlorine pool.

How difficult is it to maintain an e-clear oxygen pool?

Maintaining an e-clear oxygen pool is easy and requires less maintenance than a chlorine pool. With no harmful chemicals to handle, self-cleaning function and automated oxidation and ionization, e-clear offers hassle free pool maintenance.

However, no pool is maintenance free. With e-clear weekly maintenance involves back washing and rinsing your filter and ensuring your pool is clean and free from debris and leaves. Ensuring pH does not exceed 7.2 (pH can also be automated), visually checking the reading on the E-box is on 2Amp (conductivity at the plates) and checking copper levels are on 0.5ppm using the copper test kit provided (if levels rise above 0.5ppm adjust the copper output on the e-box down; if below 0.5ppm adjust copper output higher). Oxygen output to remain on 100%.

Does the e-clear oxygenator system require pH management?

Yes. e-clear swimming pools are maintained at neutral pH 7 (pure water), with an optimal range between 6.8 and 7.2. e-clear's natural oxidation is pH dependent with oxidation efficiency reduced when pH levels rise above 7.2.

e-clear swimming pools do not generally require alkaline management. Oxygen converts calcium in the pool into a soft bicarbonate alkaline form. Nevertheless, as with all pools an optimum TA of 80-120ppm is preferred.

pH is reduced using pool acid, HCL (food grade recommended) or citric acid. Since the DO caps the pH and the water is chemical free, acid usage is reduced by ~10-fold as compared to chlorine and salt swimming pools.

Factors that affect pH include bather load, debris and porous pool linings such as marbelite. pH can be adjusted manually or automated. Water features and drinking water systems do not require pH management.

Does an e-clear swimming pool require calcium hardness management?

Yes as with all pools, calcium hardness is an important factor. Upon installation, calcium hardness levels need to be raised to 250-300ppm. With e-clear calcium hardness levels are important for two reasons:

1. Calcium acts as an electrolyte to increase the conductivity of water which with the extremely low current at the plates is important to achieve sufficient electrolysis ie electronic oxidation and ionization output. When readings on the e-clear management system (e-box) drop below 2 Amp, this usually indicates low conductivity and that calcium hardness levels need to be increased (calcium hardness).

2. Calcium and DO (dissolved oxygen) in the water result in water that is soft and gentle on the skin. Oxygen converts the calcium into a bicarbonate form which softens the water and provides natural alkaline management.

Calcium hardness levels are very stable, but with regular back washing usually needs adjusting 1-2 times a year ie when readings on the e-box drop below 1.8-2Amp (or on our older single and double plate systems 450mA).

What are the ongoing costs of running an e-clear oxygen pool?

With an e-clear oxygen pool, running costs are reduced by over 90% with huge savings on chemicals and water. Low levels of calcium hardness flakes (to ensure calcium hardness levels remain on 250ppm) and minimal levels of pool acid are used. Ionization plates are self-sacrificing and replaced approx every 2 years depending on bather load. Ionization plates are inexpensive and easy to replace. Oxygen anodes do not need replacing.

Can I back wash my swimming pool directly to the garden?

Yes. e-clear swimming pool water is chemical free and salt free and can therefore be back washed directly to your garden and without diluting. With high levels of DO and only a trace amount of copper ions, water is non-toxic and healthy and complies with drinking water standards. Unlike salt and chlorine e-clear does not pollute natural waterways.

Can I convert my existing swimming pool to an e-clear oxygen pool?

Yes. e-clear oxygenator systems can be retrofitted. E-clear systems are fitted after your filter and before your heating system, ie on the return line to your pool.

Are there specific requirements to achieve 100% chlorine free pool water?

To achieve 100% chlorine free water your pump and filter need to be correctly sized for your pool ie within international operational standards for chlorine pools.

If your existing filters are undersized, e-clear can reduce chlorine levels by ~90-98% (providing chlorine levels withing municipal drinking water standards).

For pools under 70,000L a 5-bag (200kg) filter and 1.1kW pump is recommended.

For pools 70,000L - 100,000L a 7-bag (280kg) filter and 1.5kW pump is recommended.

To convert my salt water pool, do I need to drain my swimming pool prior to installing an e-clear system?

No. With regular back washing salt levels will decrease over time. However, you will only able to back wash directly to your garden when salt levels in your swimming pool have dropped sufficiently.

Are the copper ions generated by the e-clear oxygenator healthy and eco-friendly?

Yes. Copper has been used as a natural biocide for over 11,000 years and is the most effective, natural bactericide, fungicide and algaecide known to mankind. Developed by NASA in the 60's the ionization technology was used as an alternative to chlorine for drinking water aboard space shuttles.

In its natural form, copper ions are an essential micronutrient and required by all higher organisms for healthy metabolism and enzyme function. Copper ions are not absorbed through the skin and requires specialized receptors in the gastro-intestinal tract for uptake. Copper is essential for healthy skin, hair, bones and metabolism. Copper ions strengthen, repair and protect arteries, veins, nerve fibers and the immune system and prevents arthritis.

The WHO has recommended a daily intake of copper of between 1.5-2ppm and EC 98/83 Directives for drinking water stipulates max copper levels of 2ppm.

The e-clear oxygenator produces copper ions in its natural form. In e-clear swimming pools copper is maintained at trace amounts, ie 0.5ppm, which is below that found in most food supplements.

Is there a risk that copper ions can increase too much?

E-clear's microchip technology ensures a very low current is maintained at the copper anodes to produce a slow copper ion output.

After installing the e-clear unit, copper output is initially set to 100%.

Once a level of 0.5ppm is achieved, copper output on the e-box can be adjusted down to 25% (or level suitable for your pool) which will maintain levels at 0.5ppm. This ensures levels will not rise too high. E-clear supplies a copper test kit.

What happens if I accidentally allow copper levels to go too high?

If ionization output on the e-box is adjusted down this should not happen.

Copper levels of 1-2ppm is still withing drinking water standards so there are no health risks.

However, should levels rise above 1ppm there is a risk of staining. This is easily removed and does not cause any damage or harmful bleaching.

What makes the e-clear oxygenator system such an effective sanitizer for your swimming pool and spa pool?

The e-clear oxygenator system uses three powerful sanitation processes, ie a patented natural oxygen process, copper ionization as well as an option for ultraviolet.

How often do you need to change replacement parts?

The only replacement parts are the ionization electrodes, which are inexpensive and easy to replace and the UV lamps (on eclear UV systems only) that have an 5000 hour lifespan. Ionization anodes would normally be changed every 12 to 24 months. You do not need to replace Oxygen anodes.

When would the e-clear oxygenator system require additional ultraviolet (UV)?

For domestic pools UV is not essential, but a nice extra level of sanitation to have. E-clear recommends including UV for Jacuzzis, Spa pools, hydrotherapy pools and Koi ponds or swimming pools that are heated above 32oC.

Since UV does not provide a sanitizing residual in the water, combining the UV technology with e-clear rather than chlorine or bromine works extremely well. With E-clear no chloramine gas or trihalomethanes are generated ensuring Spa water is healthy and no adverse smells are generated.

How are oxidation and ionization levels regulated?

With the e-clear oxygenator system, oxygen and ionization anodes are housed in separate chambers rather than in one chamber. This enables oxidation and ionization functions to be regulated independently of one another with NO "switching" required between modes. The e-clear electronic managment technology provides for fully automated oxidation output and an adjustable regulator switch automatically controls ionization output at correct levels.

Can the e-clear system be adapted for unique requirements?

Yes, e-clear can custom make systems to match clients’ unique requirements such as bather load, water temperature and usage.

Does e-clear offer a warranty?

Yes, all e-clear systems come with a 3 year manufacturer's warranty if units are weather protected and 1 year if units are not covered. Oxygen electrodes come with a 5 year warranty.

Is the e-clear system suitable for outdoor pools and will I need to add stabilizers?

E-clear is very suitable for outdoor pools as e-clear sanitizers (oxygen and copper ions) are not affected by temperature or UV as with chlorine. So you don't need to add any stabilizers to your pool.

Is there a size limit for pools?

No, e-clear systems have been installed in spas, Jacuzzis and domestic pools to commercial pools of over 10 million litres.

Is there a limit to the number of bathers you can you have in a swimming pool?

Bather load is an important factor for any pool.

Bather load is directly proportional to water volume and the WHO has set recommended limits on the amount of bathers per water volume within a 24 hour period, generally 1 bather per 4,000L water.

For high bather load pools it is essential that filters are sized correctly to deal with the increased organic load. When swimming pools are overloaded filters become saturated quickly which reduce their efficiency and compromise flow rates. Poor filtration leads to murky pool water, poor sanitation and elevated levels of chlorine and other chemicals.

Operational standards for filtration rates have been set by the WHO relating to the type of pool, eg commercial training pools, spa pools or domestic pools.

In chlorine or salt chlorinated pools that are under filtrated increased levels of chlorine is used to "bleach" away excessive organic matter and to provide adequate sanitation. This results in unhealthy water with high levels of combined chlorine such as chloramine gas (that familiar chlorine smell) and carcinogenic DBPs such as chloroform and bromoform.

With e-clear we recommend bather loads and filtration in line with WHO standards. E-clear pools with inadequate filtration will require a small residual of 0.3 - 0.5ppm total chlorine (within municipal drinking water). Since oxidation breakpoint is reached through the e-clear system chlorine consumption will be reduced by ~95%.

With correct bather loads in relation to water volume and adequate filtration e-clear pools can operate 100% chlorine free.

Why is good filtration and flow rates important?

Good filtration and flow rates are crucial with any form of water sanitation to ensure suspended/organic matter is removed. The WHO has recommended standards of flow rates and filtration rates according to application.

A general rule for public/commercial pools are: A max water turnover rate of 2-4 hours; and 1Ton filtration media per 100,000L

For domestic swimming pools (under 60,000L) as with chlorine, e-clear recommends a minimum 1.1kW pump and 5 bag sand filter.

Technical recommendations are provided with each e-clear quotation.

How difficult is it to install an e-clear system?

Easy! E-clear systems are no more difficult to install than conventional salt chlorinators and can be installed by most pool builders in 1-2 hours.

Can I use solar heating to heat my e-clear oxygen pool?

Yes. The e-clear oxygenator system is excellent for heated water (far more efficient than chlorine or salt chlorinator systems since chlorine becomes useless over 32°C).

However, it is important that solar heating does not affect the flow rates. Pumping water to the roof greatly reduces flow rates and the swimming pool pump should therefore not be used for solar heating.

Solar heating should be installed on a separate dedicated line with its own pump. However, if using a heat pump or heat exchanger, this can be on the same line as the pool pump.

How long must the pool system run each day?

Similar to chlorine.

Small pools of up to 40,000 liters ~8 hours a day
Medium pools of up to 60,000 liters ~10 hours a day
Larger pools~12 hours a day

Can the e-clear system be installed with any type of pool lining?

The e-clear system works best with an impervious lining such as fiber-lined, fiberglass, epoxy painted or tiled pools. Porous linings such as marbelite leaches calcium into the water which has the effect of raising the pH of the water. Water quality and pH is more stable with an impervious lining.

Although it can work in good quality marbelite pools, white marbelite linings are prone to copper discoloration (blue colour). The calcium can act as a magnet for the ionization. This may cause the copper to fall out of suspension and discolour white marble. Charcoal or dark coloured pools are no problem since you won't see any copper discoloration.

Since e-clear pools are chlorine free, you do not get the formation of copper chloride and therefore no black stains on your lining.

Is the e-clear oxygenator system suitable for koi or fish ponds?

Yes, the system is fantastic for fish ponds and very healthy since it super oxygenates the water. For koi and fish ponds e-clear combines its oxygen technology with UV whilst ionization is omitted.

Does e-clear oxygen pools comply with WHO health directives for public pools?

Yes. Our public pools are regularly tested by independent laboratories and complies with international Health directives.

e-clear is 100% effective against E.coli, coliforms, and chlorine resistant organisms such as Legionella, Giardia cysts and Cryptosporidium.

Do you get any corrosion with an e-clear oxygen pool?

No. With e-clear water is soft and gentle. With no chlorine or salt, there are no bleaching or aggressive water chemicals to destroy the filter sand, pumps, immediate pools surround and indeed the pool shell itself! 

Can I use borehole water in my e-clear oxygen pool?

Yes, but since the quality of borehole water can vary from region to region and the quality can change from time to time, borehole water is generally not ideal.

Borehole water may contain black algae, pathogens such as E.coli and faecal coliforms as well as harmful heavy metals such as mercury and cyanide. Depending on water quality home owners that use borehole water to top up their pools may need to provide a small boost of chlorine or boost with 50% Hyprox (H2O2) when and if needed.

Borehole water is often rich in iron, sulphur and heavy metals. Therefore, as with chlorine sanitation we recommend a metal removal pre-treatment prior to switching the e-clear system on. Periodic repeat treatments may be required depending on water quality.

Do I ever need to shock my e-clear pool and what are the main reasons for an e-clear pool to go green?

As with any form of sanitation we cannot guarantee that your pool will never go green. Failure to maintain your pool correctly is the main cause for deteriorating water quality. These include not back washing your filters weekly; allowing pH to rise over 7.2; low conductivity due to low calcium hardness levels, poor flow rates and not removing debris, leaves and dirt from your pool and pump basket. Pools that are underfiltrated and that have poor flow rates are more likely to green than pools with correct filtration. To remedy you can shock your pool using chlorine or to remain chlorine free you may use 50% Hyprox (H2O2; 1L per 10,000L)

My poolbuilder has recommended a 3-bag filter and 0.75kW pump for my 50,000L pool will this suffice for e-clear?

No, a 3-bag filter and 0.75kW pump is not suitable for a 50,000L swimming pool yet with chlorine you can get away with it. This is because with a chlorinated pool you simply boost the chlorine output or top up with more chlorine. This creares very unhealthy water with increased levels of chloramines and carcinogenic DBPs such as chloroform and bromoform.

You can install an e-clear system in your pool, but you will periodically need to boost with a small amount of chlorine to compensate for under filtration. We will not gaurantee 100% chlorine free water if your filtration and flow rates are not adequate.

For a fraction of the cost more you can install a 5-bag filter and 1.1kW pump and this will make a huge difference in water quality.

Can I use a variable speed eco-friendly pump for my pool?

Yes, we have many pools operating on variable speed pumps. Ideally you should turn over/filter your entire volume of water 3x per day. So you can reduce your flow rate substantially and run your pump for 24 hours to achieve the required number of turnover periods.

Should my pump/e-clear system run over night or during the day?

Your pool should circulate during the daytime especially when you are swimming.

Does the e-clear system prevent algae from forming in my pool?

Yes absolutely. Copper is a very effective natural algaecide.

The only times when you can have problems with algae is if you neglect your pool, or if you have stagnant areas in your pool or areas with very poor flow rates. It is important during the pool design to ensure your suction and return inlets create a good flow and circulation throughout the pool.

My pool water is crystal clear, but following heavy rains it developed a green tinge over night. What do I do to remedy this?

Rainwater has a very low TA which will give pool water an overnight luminous green tinge.

Remedy by shocking with chlorine (to bleach the atoms blue again) and check that your TA is at 80-120ppm.
